Brief Guide to Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment

Salicylic acid acne treatment products are not hard to find. Just walk into any local store with a pharmacy department and you will find a wide variety of creams, lotions, toners, and other products designed to clear up acne and beautify your skin. If you have been battling an acne condition for some time, you have likely tried many of these products over the years. Obviously, not all of them work as well as they claim.

What most people do not realize about salicylic acid acne treatment is that this beta hydroxyl acid is highly effective when used on a consistent basis and on the right type of acne. Since there are many different causes and many different types of acne, no one solution can be expected to work 100% of the time.

Types of Acne Conditions

Salicylic acid acne treatment is more effective for types of acne that do not include inflammation. Skin that is inflamed will be red and will likely have some swelling around the blemishes as well. Nodules that cover larger areas of the skin are also inflamed types of acne which do not respond very well to salicylic acid acne treatment products.

The good news is most acne conditions can see at least some improvement with this type of treatment when it is used consistently and products with higher concentrations of the acid are chosen.

How It Works

So, why would salicylic acid acne treatment products work for some types of acne, but not others? It all comes down to what this acid actually does when consistently presented to the skin. While some other treatments are designed to slow down the production of oil from glands beneath the skin, salicylic acid works to clear dead skin cells and other debris out of the skin cells. It can go deep into the skin and even clears the follicle, which is what makes it so much more effective than other acids that do the same job.

Salicylic acid acne treatment products are therefore quite effective for types of acne that are caused by clogging o+f pores by dead skin cells, dirt, and oil combined together. Yet, it is not effective at curing inflammation in the skin which is the cause of some other types of acne.

How to Use Salicylic Acid Products

One big mistake many people make is to start using several different salicylic acid acne treatment products at once in a desperate attempt to get rid of their acne as quickly as possible. This may in fact prove effective in some cases, but it often leaves the skin extremely dry and fragile.

Start out with a strong salicylic acid based cream or lotion and use it daily according to the packaged instructions. You can always switch to a less potent wash that can be easily used in the shower once your outbreak has cleared up, but never use multiple products containing this acid at the same time. If you do opt to do that, make sure to include a daily as well as nightly moisturizing cream to make up for the flaky, dry skin that is likely to come at the end.

Salicylic acid acne treatment is the best place to start if you are trying to completely get rid of acne of any variety. If these products do not work, check with a dermatologist for other treatment options.
